Very porous, light weight and has the greatest surface area of any rock we have seen on the market. Porous rock stimulates the growth of beneficial bacteria that consume Ammonia and Nitrite. With the right amount of flow, as water passes deep inside the rock a second type of bacteria called Anaerobic bacteria consume Nitrogen (Nitrate), making this the most natural form of biological filtration.

Base rock also releases carbonate hardness that buffers aquarium water, allowing the pH to remain high.

Given time this rock will become cultured, thereafter it is referred to as live rock.
